When I address a letter, why do I need to put the City, State, AND Zip code when the ZIP code tells you the city, state and specific section?
What I mean is, if you go to Google maps, or expedia, or mapquest...etc...and type in a ZIP code, it will instantly take you there.
So why can't I just write the ZIP code on an envelope? That's really all they need at the Post office anyway...
For example, If I write: 1234 Street St., 60614 You can easily find that 60614 is in Chicago (Lincoln Park). So why do I also need to write "Chicago, IL" on the letter?City, State AND Zip?? Why?
Actually, if you know the extended zip code (11111-1111); then , I believe, you don't even need the address. The USPS is covertly trying to move everyone to that... Covertly because there isn't any kind of public campaign...yet...
What if there is 123456 N Street Dr, City, ST 10001 and 123456 S Street Dr, City, ST 10004 and you address your envelope 123456 Street Dr, City ST?
What if the City and state get obscured?
And, more importantly, the zip code is standardized and so can be read by machine easier than the city and state which can be misspelled, mis-abbreviated, etc.
In all actuality, you can address a letter without the city and state and it will get where it is going most of the time. And, you don't have to use the zip code. But in either case, you risk slow delivery and non-delivery due to bad address.City, State AND Zip?? Why?
You're right, but these are government workers you're dealing with, and they will go out of their way to make you provide extra useless and redundant material.
But, I do believe if you have the street address and the 9-digit zip code, it'll be delivered to the proper address. I have a PO Box and I have had mail delivered to the PO Box # with only a zip code listed.

Good point. It simply increases the chances the letter gets delivered to the correct place since many envelopes are still hand written. If you only put the zip code down then there is a chance one of the numbers could be misinterpreted, or smudge in transit. There are points along the way where the mail is sorted by hand. It's easier to glance at the city and state than to have the USPS employee be able to identify all those zip codes.
Having the city and state spelled out is extra insurance that it goes to the right place.

Where or what is Xanadu, VA?
I work at a postal facility where we process pieces of mail that for whatever reason cannot be read by the scanning machines.
I occasionally see pieces of mail addressed to "Xanadu, VA" with the mysterious zip code "00325."
I cannot find this city on any map. The zip code also does not make sense: Virginia zip codes are in the 220-- through 245-- range. Nor is it a military zip code (090-- through 098--, and 962-- through 966--). In fact, 003-- falls under "Not used."
Anyone know where or what this place is? My best guess is that it's a default value that some company's database automatically enters if you leave the city/state/zip line blank.Where or what is Xanadu, VA?

Could I use google maps/earth to find the highest point of elevation in a give area (IE: Zip Code, or State).

So I did a Little Research and Found out about Different Zones. I used the Zone Finder on some National Gardening Association Website... I think that was the name. I typed in my Zip Code and found out I am Zone 8b. My Question is. On the back of Seed Packets theres a Small Map which I cant Read and Range of When to plant the Seeds. There are 4 Colors. Yellow, Blue, Pink, and Green. How do I know which one to go by?When Do I Plant Certain Seeds? Cant Figure Map out on back of Seed Packets.?
Each brand of seeds may have thier own color codes..if you look at the usda zone map your area will be an olive colored drab green..I have some seed packets that show blue for my zone which is zone 8b also..northwest Florida..I will give you a month by month growing chart here that pertians to my part of florida..as long as your in 8b zone also..as I mentioned I am too... you will be fine to follow this chart..It tells you month by month..I have just started setting out my cauliflower and broccoli now from seedlings I start indoors under lights..It is still well in the 90's here and they are doing fine..

I am moving to an area that is slightly questionable. Me, my fiancee, and daughter are going to be living in the 33701 area code because the landlord is willing to rent to use even though we have horrible credit/rental history. We have driven around the area on a saturday and friday night just to make sure it isn't horrible and it's not theres a lot of families etc. and as far as I can tell crime is about average. Okay the apartment is slightly run down but ya gotta start somewhere and it's not as bad as some of the places we almost ended up! I have a Great Lakes, Illinois address. I've tried to use the computer's map system, Yahoo! Maps, and Yahoo! Search the address, but nothing has come up. I have a four-digit address, a street name, and the city, state, and zip code, but then there's also this two digit number before "Division" followed by a three digit number.

If I head NE on Garland road, I might get 35-40 miles (40 mph speed limit) less a dozen or more stop lights depending on how I hit them. If I try to go North, I have a choice of urban streets with 35 mph limits and lots of lights or going SW on I-30, turning N on US75 near downtown and then being able to go 60+. S is easy except at rush hour, W is takes me through traffic congestion at various levels all the time.
So a map of 1 hour distances wouldn't be a circle, it would be kind of like a spider web with points on the fast roads and dips back toward center on slower roads.

I'm trying to find an ap that preferably ties into Google Maps where the user enters a zip code to search a database to find locations in the area based on product inventory鈥aybe even within a user defined distance of the entered zip code. There would need to be an admin area where locations could be added individually or maybe even through a csv upload.

"Scripts" are distinct from the core code of the application, which is usually written in a different language, and are often created or at least modified by the end-user.
Secondly, this would require a major application and an extensive database system. To even have this working for a single vendor with multiple store locations would require that all stores upload their sales immediately to a central server. Otherwise, when a store sold out of a particular product early in the day, the database and application would still be showing the store as having that product available.
Do not even think about having something like this work for several different vendors.
You are better off having this developed exclusively for you so that you know exactly what you are getting and that it will do everything you want it to do.

I suspect that some enterprising attorney will file a class action lawsuit against lenders for illegally "redlining" whole areas of the country for reduced appraisal values with regard to LTV practices, but for now, your best bet is an FHA loan.
FHA does not reduce appraisals or LTVs based on zip codes. If the apprasier is FHA-approved, the appraisal will hold-up. If the property is conforming for your area (these just went up), go FHA, and don't worry about the rest.

What is a good mapping software?
I am looking for software that will create maps based on imported data. Specifically, I would like to visually map how many leads my company creates in a zip code and then lay other information over this, like number of offices we have in the area. I have used Microsoft MapPoint but it does not provide enough detail in terms of illustrating the data. I do not need software with GPS just a program that will help me design data maps. This is North Hollywood/Burbank. Definitely a nicer area, close to Hollywood (means 15 minutes by car for a lot of fun stuff), I would say 30 minutes to Santa Monica or Venice beach. Personally, I almost never took the freeways, simply because it was often faster to travel surface streets.
I will warn you that your pretty much stuck getting south by Coldwater Canyon or Laurel Canyon, and those streets tend to be deadlocked during peak traffic times on the weekdays. All in all, its a really nice, safe area, getting into the hills.
I would also recommend picking up a Thomas Guide for Los Angeles before you embark. The Thomas Guide is a huge map of every freaking street and it will be insanely useful.

Yep it's a pretty good location. As Deb said if you don't have a car you need to become familiar with the northern most red line stop which is to the south east of this location, not too awfully far from this location...

I have a friend who lives a few blocks down on St. Claire where it is mostly single family homes. I wouldn't say it is a great area, but certainly you could do worse. You are close to a major street (Victory Blvd.) where you can easily catch the bus if you don't have a car (there's a Starbucks on the corner of Victory and Coldwater Canyon.) The Red Line Metro station is to the south; there you can take the train to Hollywood and downtown L.A. However, as someone else said, you really want to have a car here. This city is quite vast geographically and unfortunately some areas don't have good public transportation.

The Villages is a huge retirement community with all their own facilities.Stores-banks-golf courses,ect.These are homes people buy.They mostly get around on golf carts which have their own little building attached to the garages of the homes.The zip code is32162-1425. It is by Lake Sumter landing and spanish Springs.I heard it is not too far from Ocala,FL. It is one and a half hours driving time to Orlando airport. I think The Villages are south of the airport. It is known as the best place in FL. to retire as there are 19 golf courses and like I said has its own town and is gated (I think). It also has pools,rec.areas, dances and many, many activties. I was giving a selling area by my boss, I now would like a to come up with a way to get all the zip codes for the mapped area. There is really no set reasoning for the mapped zone so i was hoping for a way to draw out my area roughly and have it give me the zip codes for all the places within the marked off space. Best Navigator on the current market?

The TomTom does have a really nice function where it shows you the cheapest gas in the city, but i read that it often shows you law breaking u-turns and such.
The Magellan i hear is also nice, i just found it to be too bulky and complicated for my case, and some people have found trouble with buying maps for traveling, so that's definitely something to keep in mind.
It all depends on your moms preference, since you know her the best just go to the store and test all of them out, and see which one she would enjoy using the best

It is my understanding that Sandy Springs used to be a part of Atlanta. It is also my understanding that 30350 zip code is designated as "Atlanta".
Sandy Springs has become its own city in the last few years....so when search google maps for 30350 zip code it shows a map of Sandy Springs, but says "Atlanta".
I looked up the zip code for Sandy Springs, and there about 4 of them. One of them looks like it covers a majority of sandy springs area.....but there are parts of sandy springs that have 30350 zip. Even small portions od Dunwoody have the 30350 zip!?
How can three entirely different cities / towns have the same zip? Its creating a crap-ton of confusion with my billers. When billers enter your zip, Atlanta pops up as default. Populate a google map with data from a mysql database?
OK, I've got a MySQL database with pieces of data (zip codes) that I would like to show on a google map. I have an API, I just have no clue how to show this. It's for internal uses at the moment (I want a visual of where our customers are located by zip in the US), so it doesn't need to be fancy.
I know very little about working with API's, but I do have the logins for the database. Is their any fancy application or easy tutorial that will allow me to show this data easily on a google map?

I am having a difficult time finding information on a good API to use for my coding explorations and client sites.
I need to find a way to obtain surrounding zip codes based on a user submitted zip code. Ideally, I would like to be able to find address locations based on a starting location and within a distance.

I live in minnesota and my boyfriend lives in north carolina. I sent out a package or first class parcel/mail on friday. I checked on the tracking record and its telling me it was undelivered. Most of the time hand sorters will look at the city and state instead of zip codes.

I am looking to move to Las Vegas. I have found some very nice homes but do not know if they are in nice areas. some area codes that i have found range from Henderson to North Las Vegas. Anyone know what kind of neighborhood this is? How does it compare to my childhood neighborhood North Richmond? I鈥檓 very familiar with Montclair, Rockridge, Temescal %26amp; West Oakland. That was my area code when I first moved out to the east bay. It's not that far from Rockridge or Piedmont at all. You have Kaiswer hospital nearby as well. You have many options for travel as it's near various bus routes, biking is an option %26amp; Mac Arthur BART is nearby as well.
I haven't lived in Richmond, though I have lived in Oakland, San Francisco, %26amp; now Berkeley. I've never been offered dugs while living in Oakland. I know of a library on Piedmont Ave, though I'm sure there's another local one nearby as well. Anyone know what kind of neighborhood this is? How does it compare to my childhood neighborhood North Richmond? I鈥檓 very familiar with Montclair, Rockridge, Temescal %26amp; West Oakland. I know very little about East Oakland. Just that hills=safe, flatlands=dangerous. Rarely ventured south of Lake Merritt, save occasional trips to the Coli. I was always offered drugs when in that neighborhood.
This neighborhood appears to be sort of on the border. I鈥檓 not terribly concerned about schools right now. I plan on moving before that becomes an issue. I鈥檓 mostly interested in crime rates, ambiance, transportation, libraries, bike-friendliness, places of worship, etc.What kind of neighborhood is the 94601 zip code in East Oakland?
That was my area code when I first moved out to the east bay. It's not that far from Rockridge or Piedmont at all. You have Kaiswer hospital nearby as well. You have many options for travel as it's near various bus routes, biking is an option %26amp; Mac Arthur BART is nearby as well.
I haven't lived in Richmond, though I have lived in Oakland, San Francisco, %26amp; now Berkeley. I've never been offered dugs while living in Oakland. I know of a library on Piedmont Ave, though I'm sure there's another local one nearby as well. There are a variety of religious establishments for mormons, buddists, christians, catholics, jews, etc; so I'm sure you can find one that makes you feel comfotable.
I enjoyed my years with the 94601 area code. I would say aside from living in San Francisco, I would walk to majority of the places I wanted to go to (%26amp; I lived in the flatlands part of the area). Why did Yahoo! Maps remove the zip code display ? MAPQUEST wasn't that stupid.?
